Books by Hugh Morrison

In 2014 the book, “Structural Engineering Art and Approximation”, was published. A 5th edition was released in 2019. It is a book for undergraduates through to graduate engineers, architects; and even experienced engineers. It gathers together simplified methods for structural appraisal, with design examples for those who seek a clear guide to conceptual structural design. Design starts at the bottom of a pyramid of choices: selection of materials, method of analysis, structural form and appropriateness. Before designing in detail a designer needs to approximate and sketch.

A new book, shortly to be published, “Structurally Insulated Panels Design. Structural Design Manual”, is believed to be the first text book to cover design of SIP panels for structural engineers. It is based on limit state design with examples which accord with Eurocode 5 for timber which is now widely used in the UK and throughout Europe. SIP structures are essentially foam filled sandwich panels, most commonly faced with orientated strand board (OSB). With a growing market for SIP structures for domestic through to commercial buildings, whether as the primary structure, or as structural backing for cladding in framed construction, engineering guidance is patchy at best. In the UK engineers have to resort to a variety of sources, from manufacturer’s data to design guides produced by engineers called upon by manufacturers to fill the gap in knowledge. The book is intended to fulfil the need for comprehensive guidance for undergraduates and practising structural engineers.
